This is a 2-3/8" diameter bronze medal, the obverse designed by & marked "Henri Hebert 1920".

A male skater is pictured within the legend Amateur Skating Association of Canada while the reverse pictures winged skates embellished with maple leaves & laurel branch w/legend Figure Skating Department. Engraved inscription reads "Canadian Championships / 1939 / Toronto / Second / Joan McNeil"--edge impressed w/small mint mark & the word BRONZE. The proud winner has had the medal expertly and neatly converted into a buckle. Condition is excellent & medal hasn't been cleaned.

Founded in 1887, the ASAC changed its name to the Canadian Figure Skating Assn in 1939, making this the final year for medals marked ASAC F/S Dept. The Association became "Skate Canada" in 2000.

Designed by a member of the country's most famous family of sculptors, Henri Hebert (1884-1950), son of Louis Philippe & brother of Adrien, was Parisian-trained & a founder of the Sculptor's Society of Canada (SSC) in 1928.
